On 6th February Sculpture Students completed a piece of work they called, ‘The Wall’ in CSAD sculpture studios.

The aim of ‘The Wall’ was to make information concerning student opposition to the closing of the sculpture department transparent. The wall was meant to act as a forum for discussion for all, to pose an intelligent critique of the workings of the institution, Cardiff School of Art and Design.

‘The Wall’ was composed of pages from students ‘save sculpture petition’, photographs of the peaceful demonstration at UWIC Llandaff campus, banners from the peaceful vigil and letters of support from others in the arts community who wholeheartedly support the view of keeping CSAD Sculpture department from closure.

 On Tuesday evening, after all had left their studio space, ‘someone’ within the staff of CSAD ripped every piece of work from ‘The Wall’ in the studio.
Apparently the ‘person’ who tore down the wall said that someone had graffitid a rude word on one of the banners made by students.
This was not part of the work. Students chose to voice opinion with intelligence and graciousness and as a group choose not to act with malice or offence.
If indeed someone had vandalised the work we ask;

1.       Why was the Head of Sculpture not notified of the allegedly offensive material?
2.       Why did this ‘someone’ see it appropriate to tear down a whole wall of students work in their studio space without notifying any tutors?

3.       Why this action was only completed when all students had left the studios and no students asked if this supposed ‘offensive material’ was part of our intended work?

Yet again, we, the students at CSAD have been treated with a complete lack of respect. We are met with nothing but antagonism and contempt.
The day after the work was maliciously torn from our studio walls someone painted this on the wall.

It seems that student population cannot be silenced
